Hello, hoopheads, and welcome to The Post Presence, the new hub for daily women’s basketball writing from me, Andy Tulin. By way of a quick introduction, I spent the last 15 months writing Tulin’s Treasures Monday-Friday for the Her Hoop Stats newsletter, before which I was a researcher and producer for CBS Sports from the fall of 2009 through February 2024. I am also, as anyone who’s read my work or follows me on Bluesky already knows, an obsessive women’s basketball fan (and sports fan in general), and I am thrilled to keep sharing that love of the game with you here at The Post Presence.
First and foremost, I want to thank Her Hoop Stats — particularly the site’s founder Aaron Barzilai and primary editor Adam Vachon — for the opportunity to hijack their already-established platform on a daily basis over the last year-plus. I approached Aaron and Adam with my vision for a daily newsletter focused on the on-court aspects of women’s hoops in November 2024 with essentially no established following and having written just a couple of pieces for the site, and they couldn’t have been better partners in helping me bring that vision to life. I’m immensely proud of the work we did together and thrilled that I’ll be continuing to collaborate with HHS in the future, both on written work and other projects. I’ll also continue to spread the gospel of HHS as an invaluable resource for anyone who engages with women’s basketball as either a fan or professional. I don’t think writing The Post Presence would even be possible without it, but I have no intention of finding out.
The time has come, however, for this pet project to be all mine, and for it to sink or swim on my back. My goal here remains the same as ever: to fill what I believe is a void in women’s basketball coverage that is actually about the sport of women’s basketball. I couldn’t be more excited to get back to doing that work. The Post Presence launches in earnest on Wednesday, April 22, with the first in a series of team-centric WNBA season previews — starting at the top with the reigning champion Las Vegas Aces. That’ll give me just enough time to look at one team a day through Wednesday, May 6, followed by a league-wide predictions piece on May 7 before the season begins on May 8. That’s when I’ll be turning on paid subscriptions, but please know that I want very badly for this to be a place where all women’s basketball fans can read up on what’s going on in the sport they love, paid subscriber or otherwise. During the season, my plan is to publish at least two free posts on every WNBA gameday — a Roundball Roundup previewing the slate of games and Notes of the Night recapping what went down. Paid subscribers will also receive approximately one exclusive post per week, ranging from things like opening weekend overreactions to a rant deep dive on my beloved New York Liberty sucking despite having a “superteam” on the floor — is it obvious that last season left some scars?
There’s not a whole lot more to say at the moment, other than that anyone who followed my work at HHS should already have a very good idea of what to expect. There’ll be a little more of me in the work now that I’m not responsible for someone else’s platform — spoiler: team previews will include the Marvel Snap deck that each squad reminds me of the most — but truth be told, HHS pretty much let me write whatever I wanted, and I truly appreciate that. I can’t promise that I’ll always hit the nail on the head like I did when picking the Aces to win last year’s title or comparing Cathy Engelbert to a feckless middle-manager, but I can promise to always do my best to do right by the incredible women who make this sport worth loving, and to keep the focus on the hardwood. Given the last few days of discourse in the sport, that feels like a great place to start.
